I'll never forget the first time I saw Mocha Girl One (HmG) . She was an emergency c-section, and had to spend several days in NICU. She was born four days past her estimated due date and looked huge in her incubator. I imagined her to be especially delicate and feminine. I couldn't wait to frill her up, and more importantly to do her hair ! The only reason she wasn't sporting a barrette the day we took her home from the hospital, was because the one I brought to match her lacey outfit, slid right out. Mocha Girl One's baby hair was silky straight and fine. As the weeks rolled by, it became wavier until she had a lovely curly fro. I washed it all the time . I brushed it several times a day . I tried snap clips, and moved to velcro barrets when the clips slid out. I bought a different head band for every outfit. Meanwhile her curls continued to wind tighter and tighter. It's interesting that you posted this now--I was just wondering the same thing about my 12 year olds head--"why does it seem so much fuzzier this year in the small box braids?" (even she has asked to have it re-done and my goal like you was mid-August!!!"). I think there's two things for me--one, her hair is different than her older sister's whose just holds the braids better, and two she's handling it more now that she's older (and wearing a head scarf at night less). She's old enough to do things with it so now in addition to swimming all the time she's putting it into buns or ponies or asking me to french braid them--plus she's using more headbands. I smiled when you did the video clip because her head looks quite similar to both your girls!

I have to say though, that as I talk myself down from being too critical or negative it's your voice that I hear in my head. "Their hair is supposed to fuzz up. It's supposed to be curly. It's doing what black hair does. It's clean, it's healthy, they are having fun."
I've decided to let my daughter's hair the way it is for the next two weeks and buy her some new headbands and bows or clips to help her feel pretty while we make it to the end. I only have three heads of hair to do but I don't want to be doing them all at the exact same time before school starts so I have to pace myself :-)
Remember to be kind to yourself too--I think you should give yourself an "A" for acceptance!
